House Republicans urge rejection of Medicaid expansion

The House Republican Caucus voted overwhelmingly on Monday for its leader’s motion saying Texas should reject the federal health care law’s proposed expansion of Medicaid.

Rep. Brandon Creighton, R-Conroe, urged his 94 fellow Republicans to turn down the federal dollars associated with the Affordable Care Act’s proposed Medicaid expansion in the current form proposed, said spokeswoman Carrie Simmons. The expansion is a key feature of President Barack Obama’s chief legislative achievement.

In the GOP members’ closed-door session, no alternative was offered, Simmons said.

“It’s early in the process,” she said.

Rep. Lois Kolkhorst, R-Brenham, said she and other House Republicans want to see “if we can work out a Texas-centric solution with [the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services], providing something that is not promoting the current Medicaid system.”
